When water is on the floor, the first goal is to stop it, the second is to get it out, and the third is to dry everything that got wet before it warps, delaminates, or grows mold. The EPA advises drying water-damaged areas within 24 to 48 hours to help prevent mold growth.

What to do right now

  1. Stay safe. Don't walk into standing water if outlets, cords, or appliances may be wet. If water has reached the electrical panel or you can't reach it from a dry spot, call SCE or an electrician. If you smell gas, leave and call 911 or SoCalGas from outside.
  2. Stop the water at the fixture shutoff or the main water valve, usually near the street or where the line enters the house.
  3. Document it. Take photos and video of the water, the source, and damaged items before moving or throwing anything away.
  4. Move what you can. Lift furniture onto blocks or foil, pull up rugs, and move electronics and papers to a dry room.
  5. Call your insurer promptly if you plan to file a claim, and ask what they need from you.

What water extraction involves

  • Assessment: finding the source, identifying the type of water, and using moisture meters to map how far it spread.
  • Extraction: truck-mounted or portable extractors pull water out of carpet, pad, and hard floors. Standing water is pumped out.
  • Removal of ruined materials: wet carpet pad, swollen baseboards, and the bottom of soaked drywall are often cut out so walls can dry.
  • Drying setup: air movers and dehumidifiers, checked daily with moisture readings. See structural drying.

Clean, gray, and black water

Restoration companies commonly sort water into three categories (from the IICRC S500 standard). Category 1 is clean water from a supply line. Category 2 (gray water) has some contamination, such as dishwasher or washing machine overflow. Category 3 (black water) is grossly contaminated: sewage, or floodwater from outside. Clean water left sitting can become more contaminated over time. Category 3 water means porous items it touched usually have to be thrown out; see sewage backup cleanup and flood cleanup.

How fast can someone come?

Your request is passed on right away, and the provider sets the visit time. Many restoration companies take after-hours calls, but availability depends on the day and demand, especially during big storms when many homes are affected at once. We can't promise a response time.

What affects the cost

We don't publish prices because they vary widely. Cost depends on how much area got wet, the type of water, how long it sat, what has to be removed, how many days of drying are needed, and whether rebuild is included. Ask for a written estimate and daily drying logs.

Hiring tips

  • Check the contractor's license at cslb.ca.gov and ask for proof of insurance.
  • Read any work authorization before you sign it, especially language about insurance payments being assigned to the company.
  • Ask for moisture readings at the start and end of the job.
  • Be cautious of door-to-door offers after storms.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a shop vac instead?

For a small clean-water spill on a hard floor, a wet/dry vacuum, fans, and a dehumidifier may be enough. If water soaked carpet pad, went under flooring, or wicked into walls, professional extraction and moisture readings are more reliable.

Should I pull up wet carpet myself?

You can pull back a rug or lift furniture, but take photos first and ask your insurer before discarding anything. Carpet pad soaked by clean water is often replaced; carpet touched by sewage or floodwater should be discarded.

Will my floors be ruined?

Not always. Tile and sealed concrete usually survive. Hardwood and laminate can sometimes be dried in place if action is fast. A moisture reading tells you more than appearance.
